Following its opening at the William Morris Gallery, Althea McNish: Colour Is Mine toured to Manchester, adapting to the expanded galleries of the Whitworth Gallery.
Building on the themes of diasporic identity, shared histories, and belonging, we sought to reinterpret and reimagine Althea McNish’s 1966 Bachelor Girls Room.
Our ‘Bachelor Girl’ is a person of multiple locations who instinctively understands what it means to be simultaneously situated both here and elsewhere. This is the condition of the diaspora. Her home reflects her lived experience, encompassing intertwined histories and cultures. Photos by David Oates.
